BDC@ The Branches Local History Series

According to the Library System’s Strategic Plan, the BDC has to sponsor 5 programs and/or instructional sessions on local history, family history, archaeology, Gullah culture, and/or our natural environment each year, spreading the wealth among the 5 branch libraries. (I think of it as the “One Plan:” 1 program per branch location per calendar year).  We are well on our way to exceed that goal yet again.
The Spring and Summer schedule of local history and genealogical programs is set. We’re celebrating national Preservation Week with a workshop (Registration required; limit of 20 participants), testing out a living history program model with a colonial explorer, giving a presentation about the most destructive storm ever to impact Beaufort County, and preparing for the arrival of the “Civil War 150” traveling exhibit (sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the Library of America with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities) by offering family history sessions on finding Civil War ancestors.

What can I say?  We’re excited to share the unique history, culture, and environment of this wonderful place we live with everyone! Sometimes we share in person by helping our on-site customers.  Sometimes we share via snail mail, electronic mail, or over the telephone by helping our off-site customers. Sometimes we share through social media, such as this blog and on Facebook. Sometimes we share by coordinating and presenting programs or instructional sessions in the local history series. Sometimes we share by helping create the local history tidbits in the "Beaufort County History Moments" series.  Bottom line: We work hard, very hard, to bring the history of our beloved home to anyone interested in the exploration.
