Just Added: Archaeology Program Scheduled for March 14th

Sometimes we get rather last minute opportunities to bring interesting programs to you. Such is the case for this local history program about two pre-WWII archaeological digs in Beaufort County. Indeed artifacts from those digs are some of the oldest artifacts in the Charleston Museum's collection.

Dr. Warren K. Moorehead, one of the most famous American archeologists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century did his last extended fieldwork in the Beaufort, SC area in early 1933 at the behest of a Boston architect, Woldemar H. Ritter who had an avuncular interest in collecting surface artifacts, field testing, and exploring shell middens. John Fisher, current President of the Archaeological Society of South Carolina and curator of Archaeology at the Charleston Museum will share information about the expeditions, artifacts recovered, and the surviving records held by his institution.
