Today is the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln, considered by some to be one of our best US presidents; considered by others, as not so spiffy. C-SPAN has posted a number of web links for you to start making your own assessment of our 16th President.
You can read the "Letters to the Editor" in the Beaufort Gazette over the past two weeks to get a taste of the on-going debate about Lincoln's beliefs and actions.
For a digital version of a document written to Abraham Lincoln from Beaufort in 1863, read this letter about emancipation. The letter now resides in the Abraham Lincoln Papers at the Library of Congress.
Later in the year, Amanda Brewer of Beaufort Branch Library and I will be hosting some programs about the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. Stay tuned for more details.
