Gullah Festival

If you are anywhere close to Beaufort County South Carolina, then you'll have heard about the 23rd annual Gullah Festival being held in the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park this weekend.

Online versions of the Island Packet, Beaufort Gazette, and Beaufort Tribune local newspapers have been running stories all week in anticipation. There is certain to be continuing coverage over the Memorial Day weekend.

The Library takes its charge to document diversity within our community very, very seriously. As Wilbur Cross noted in his book Gullah Culture in America (Praeger, 2008), Beaufort County Library "has one of the South's largest collections of materials on the Gullah language and the sea island culture."

For the more research minded, the Library has a variety of Gullah related resources to share.
My assistant, Charmaine Seabrook Concepcion, designed a display case full of Gullah materials for the Beaufort Branch Library. Drop by 311 Scott Street to take a look.

Among the vertical files available in the BDC are:
Low Country Gullah Culture Special Resource Study
Festivals--Native Islander Gullah Celebration
Festivals--Gullah Festival
Gullah Culture, Pilot Study, 2000-2002. Ohio University, Southern Campus
Gullah Culture--Tours.

The local history sections at the branch libraries include many Gullah titles to check out, including Cross's book Gullah Culture in America (Call Number 305.8961 CRO).

From the comfort of your home, you can read our online articles, "Gullah Language" and "Bibliography of Gullah and Sea Island Cultural Materials" by our own Dennis Adams and the late Hillary Barnwell.

Several local organizations advocate and celebrate their Gullah roots. Additional information is available through Penn Center, the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition, and the Native Island Business and Community Affairs Association.

Enjoy your holiday weekend! Please remember that all parts of the Beaufort County Library will be closed on Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day.
