Reminder: Please register for the "Altamaha and the Yamasee Indians" with Dr. Eric Poplin lecture sooner than later. It is not at all unusual for all seats at the Beaufort History Museum/Beaufort County Library local history series to be taken a week before the lecture occurs. (As of Friday, 8/31 at 5:45pm there were only 25 slots left.) Go to the Beaufort History Museum website to register: http://www.beauforthistorymuseum.wildapricot.org/event-3048128. When all the seats are taken, registration is closed.
I will be over in Bluffton doing
a talk late the afternoon of September 13th about how we South Carolinians
like to say place and family names, but there’s generally method – and perhaps
some occasional madness -- to our Correct Mispronunciations. There's no need to register because the Bluffton Branch's largest meeting space seats 112 people. That's plenty of space for a gracious plenty of local history aficionados.
If you're interested in learning who's available to help you and what's available to support your investigation of African-American family history, sign up to attend the "Tracing Your Gullah Geechee Roots" workshop on October 6.
BDC staff will be at St. Helena Branch Library that day along with representatives of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, the International African-American Museum's Family History Center staff, and genealogists Akosua Moore and Kimberly Morgan to share key resources and strategies to uncovering the stories of your ancestors. There are 3 ways to register for this free workshop:
