National Postcard Week, May 5 - 11, 2019

National Postcard Week is an annual event begun in 1984 to promote the study and use of postcards for entertainment, education, and as artwork. It is held in the first full week of May. This year National Postcard Week runs from Sunday, May 5 through Saturday, May 11.

The postcard shown above is from our collection. For a very short time in the early 1980s, I lived on a boat docked at Harbor Town, Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island.

Suggested activities to celebrate the national commemoration:

1) View Arnsberger Collection postcards online through our partnership with the Lowcountry Digital Library http://bit.ly/2q8VS3e

2) View some Palmetto Studios postcards in the Lucille Hasell Culp Collection online through our partnership with the Lowcountry Digital Library http://bit.ly/2HwnJ8W

3) Indeed if you just put "Postcards" in the LCDL search box, you'll get almost 5000! hits

4) We do not have - nor are ever likely to have - all our postcards uploaded into the LCDL but you can see more in our Research Room during our regular hours of operation: The Rev. Robert Peeples postcard collection has more Hampton and Jasper County related images and content often mentions family comings-and-goings. We also have an artificial collection of staff curated postcard collections for Beaufort County.

6) Kristi had more favorite postcards than we have days of the week for the BDC's  Facebook page. I had to narrow down her choices. Be sure to check Facebook for our selections starting tomorrow.

7) Kristi is our "go-to" postcard collection handler. She is working on adding additional items and cleaning up the postcard database we have stored in PastPerfect software inside of the Research Room.

Please contact us for information about other postcards and local history materials we have: bdc@bcgov.net or call 843-255-6468.
