We are delighted to host Dr. Stephen R. Wise tomorrow along with the Beaufort County Historical Society. Dr. Wise is one of the "Rock Star" historians who live and study Beaufort's long and storied history. Perhaps you've read one of his books: Rebellion, Reconstruction and Redemption; Bridging the Sea Islands' Past and Present; Gate of Hell; Lifeline of the Confederacy; attended one of his classes at USCB; or seen him in documentaries on the History Channel or PBS. His day job is Parris Island Museum Director and Cultural Resources Manager with the responsibility of preserving architectural, cultural and archaeological property on the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.
This lecture is the very first one in the "Historically Speaking" series we hope will be fruitful for both the Beaufort District Collection and the Beaufort County Historical Society. Both organizations like to offer free and open to the general public local history programs so we are not offering reserved seats this time. However, that may change later. We will gauge the response this time and adjust plans accordingly. For now and for this inaugural lecture, guests will be seated in the Beaufort Meeting Room, 311 Scott Street, on a first come, first seated basis beginning at 11:30 AM.
We do hope that you'll be able to join us.
Heads up: The next BCHS/BDC "Historically Speaking" lecture will be Maxine Lutz, Executive Director (Retired) of Historic Beaufort Foundation on November 21, 2019. Her lecture is entitled: "Not Just Gossip: Who Dwelt in Beaufort's Historic Houses?".
