Research Room Schedule, August 15 - 19

We're still running short of staff requiring adjustments to our usual Research Room schedule. Regular hours are scheduled to resume (barring anything unforeseen) on Monday, August 22nd. But in the meantime, here's the schedule for the upcoming week:   

Mon., August 15: Research Room open 9 am to Noon; closed Noon to 1 pm; open 1 pm to 5 pm
Tues., August 16: By advance appointment only
Wed., August 17: By advance appointment only
Thurs., August 18: Research Room open 9 am to Noon; closed Noon to 1 pm; open 1 pm to 5 pm
Fri., August 19: Research Room open 9 am to Noon; closed Noon to 1 pm; open 1 pm to 3 pm

Don't forget that the Pollitzer Family exhibit on loan from the South Carolina Historical Society is in the 2nd floor Gallery, 311 Scott Street, Mondays though Fridays 9 am to 5 pm until 31 August 2016.

Last Ferry to Beaufort

As long time readers know, the Beaufort District Collection supports genealogical research efforts in the tri-county area. Our interaction with family historians can encompass many years or consist of one short question/response. We've been acquainted with Charles Wersler and his work trying to flesh out his memories of his grandfather with photographs, documents, and historical records for more than a decade now.

On Saturday, April 18th at 1 o'clock in the afternoon, we're all in for a treat. Wersler will be in the Beaufort District Collection to share a bit about what he learned about what life was like for the last ferryman in Beaufort County. The program is first come, first seated.  This program is free to anyone interested in the topic of local history or genealogy to attend.


Following his introduction to the book, Wersler will be happy to answer your questions about life in Beaufort between the Civil War and 1952, sell and sign copies of the book for your personal library.

Copies of Last Ferry to Beaufort: The Life and Times of Captain Willie Roberts, 1865 - 1952 are available in the Research Room as well as in the Local History section at each of the Branch Libraries. Call number: B ROBERTS

Come early and you can take advantage of special hours for the "Heart of the Home" exhibit currently on display. The exhibit and artifacts will open at 11 am and will close at the start of the book talk.

Got Artifacts? and Other Archaeological matters

Celebrate International Archaeology Day by joining us for "What the Heck Is It?" - Take 2 on Saturday, October 18 beginning at noon. Bring your artifacts for identification by archaeologists Dr. Eric Poplin and Dr. Jon Leader. Session ends at 3 pm. Learn about the archaeology of the local Yamasee Indians from 1684 up to the start of the Yamasee War, the most significant Native uprising of the early colonial period from Professor Chris Judge, USC- Lancaster.

Professor Chris Judge shifts gears a bit for the evening lecture. Between 1000 BC and AD 1200 Native American societies in South Carolina introduced the bow and arrow, expanded recently invented clay pottery traditions, began growing native crops in gardens and buried certain individuals with great fanfare and effort.  Archaeologists call these societies "Woodland" and new research across the Carolinas is shedding new light on these people. This talk, the first lecture in a series of three to supplement the "Shaping of South Carolina" exhibit currently on display, will explore these topics. This lecture is co-sponsored by the South Carolina Historical Society.
