Ahoy, me Hearties! Arrrrhhhh ya talkin' like a salty seadog today, too? Well, dust off your Jolly Roger, grab an old salt, and ditch yer fellow landlubbers for a day brimmin' with buccaneers, booty, and Beaufort port. Aye, and a bit'o' pirate talk too! Ya can't find a bottle o'rum har, but ya can find out more about pirates and those scallywag privateers! Avast ye! Pirate booty awaits ye at the Beaufort District Collection! Aarrrhhhg!!!

It's a Pirate's Life for Me! (at least for today)
Here's a fun commemoration for you to observe: It's International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Fancy a sing song? There's even a "drunken sailor" sing along (adult alcoholic beverage optional) if the spirits so move you! (bad pun intended)
Bluffton and Hilton Head Branch Libraries are getting into the spirits (bad pun intended again), too. (But rest assured, there will be absolutely no Drunken Sailors on board!)

Blackbeard the Pirate
A decade or so ago (yes, I've been here that long), a Beaufort District Collection Room customer got very annoyed with me upon learning that the wreck of the Queen Anne's Revenge was in that other Beaufort (the one pronounced Bo fert) in North Carolina. He was most definitely in the wrong state. Although Blackbeard plied these waters, he was captured and killed off Beaufort, NC 293 years ago today.

Maritime archaeology activities have been on-going since the ship was discovered in 1996. See artifacts and video of the recovery efforts in Beaufort, NC here.

If Edgar Allan Poe were alive, he'd be 200 today!
January 19 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of American writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849).
Since BDC Connections deals with advocacy for libraries and archives, matters of an historic, cultural, or environmental nature in a quite small geographical location, and best preservation practices for family treasures and library materials,
Q: What is the connection Poe has to South Carolina that touches on one or more of the BDC Connections themes?
The short answer is:
He, like many others, served part of his military duty in coastal South Carolina and became inspired by our natural beauty to write a tale of historical fiction about it.
The Edgar Allan Poe Branch Library on Sullivan's Island in Charleston County is named in his honor. Poe was stationed on Sullivan's Island as a private in the United States Army in 1827 and 1828 and used the island setting as the background for his famous story of pirates and lost treasure, "The Gold Bug." For an updated approach to "The Gold Bug," (including a YouTube preview of a film release), try this.
