September is Library Card Sign Up Month
Every September, the American Library Association encourages folks to get the best school supply of all: a library card. But library cards aren't just for the young and enrolled, it's for anyone -- cradle to grave -- with a curiosity about any topic under the sun.
A good public library is the heart of its community. It is America’s great equalizer, providing everyone the same access to information and opportunities for success. As I like to say, my goal as a public librarian is to treat everyone equally badly -- and have not a soul claim that he/she was mistreated!
The recession has really increased the number of folks who are using their local public libraries -- including our own Beaufort County Library. We are happy, but challenged, by all the extra business. The recession also means that we have less money to fund what we do for ever more library customers. Sandra Saad addresses this two-edged sword in her "From the Beacon" column about Library Card Sign Up Month.
In spite of our challenges, we stand ready to help you by offering access to the internet, sharing our expertise, providing printed and audio/visual resources, and hosting programs for the young, the old and the in-between.
Here are some of the ways BCL is celebrating Library Card Sign Up Month:
1) The "out and about" Library posse may reward you with a fast food coupon for flashing your a library card "out and about." [Please note: The only flashing we want to see is your library card please. No other flashing is allowed in a public place!]
2) We will give away one gift certificate each day to a customer currently being served at a checkout desk.
3) Register for a new card and be registered for the gift card drawing at the end of the month.
When is the last time you truly gave any thought to the value you can receive from your public library card? IMNSHO [which stands for
"In my not so humble opinion"] It's by far, without dispute, the absolute best deal a person will ever get for his local tax money! If you don't have one, come apply for one. If you already own one, please use it often. BCL is here to help with all your information needs.
