Notable State Document Award goes to SCDL

The South Carolina Digital Library received a Notable State Document Award from the South Carolina State Library:

The selection is announced annually on or near Freedom of Information Day, March 16, the birthday of President James Madison, an early proponent of citizen access to government information. Awards were presented to the winning agencies by David Goble, State Library Director, at a morning ceremony at the State Library, March 16th:
As we celebrate Freedom of Information Day, I salute South Carolina state agencies that continue to make their information available to the public, either in print form or electronically. The agencies honored todaycontinue a fine tradition of open government in the Palmetto State.
Winning documents were selected by a group of state documents depository librarians from around the state and by staff at the South Carolina State Library. See press release.

Why do we care? 1) Because the BCL's first digital collection, Phosphate, Farms, and Family: The Donner Collection (2007) was a pilot project for the inclusion of public libraries into the South Carolina Digital Library. and 2) Our next digital project, converting 300 images from the Lucille Hasell Culp Collection into digital form for the 300th Anniversary celebration of the founding of Beaufort Town, will be done in collaboration with the scanning center for the lowcountry area of the SCDL.
