March and April are often heavy with local history programs and outreach activities. This year is no exception - though BDC is about half-as-busy with such activities in April than we are in March. Even so, we are plenty busy next month.
April happens to be National Poetry Month - and Sydney enjoys poetry - so much so that she'll be giving a presentation on Poems and Postcards on April 10th at 11:00 AM at the Port Royal Branch Library.
The BDC's Library Assistant, Sydney Whiteside, graduated from American Military University with an Associate of Arts in Communication with a concentration in Human Resources. Sydney began working for the BDC in November of 2024 and has loved every moment since. With five years of customer service experience and a long-lived appreciation for genealogy and history, she is able to effectively assist patrons on their research journey. She plans to continue her education in the near future, but for now, she is building upon her customer service and research skills while learning (and loving) the importance of preservation.
Join Sydney as she shares her favorite poems and postcards from both the BDC's library and archival collections. Learn about the lives of local poets; listen to their poems and watch their words come to life like never before through complementary postcards.
Please note: The Port Royal Branch Meeting Room has very limited seating, so registration is required for this event. Registration will open on April 1st. Click the link here to register or call 843-255-6468 to reserve your seat!
With National Library Week (NLW) and Preservation Week (PW) on the horizon - two topics near and dear to our hearts - and because the Library system insists that each unit offers at least two programs in honor of NLW:
Join the BDC Staff on April 22nd at 5:30 PM on the 2nd Floor of the Beaufort Branch Library for Finding Your Joy in Local History Online to celebrate National Library Week.
Interested in local history resources that you can access online? Curious about how to navigate the BCL website's new Local History page? Join the BDC's team as we walk you through our blogs, digital collections, and other online resources we offer.
The program will take place in the Beaufort Branch Library on the 2nd Floor. Seating is limited, so registration for this program is required. Registration opens on April 8th. To register, click this link or call us at 843-255-6468 to reserve your seats!
The BDC's Cassandra Knoppel will give a special iteration of her program Adventures in Archives on April 23rd at 11:00 AM at the Hilton Head Branch Library. This program will highlight some of the unexpected treasures in the Beaufort District Collection with an island flair!Cassandra Knoppel, the BDC's Library Specialist, will share the fascinating backstories of some of our newest collections and our Hilton Head-related archival materials. This local history program is designed to delight stout-hearted, true-blue history nerds. Take a trip into the wild side of the archives with us!
Cassandra graduated from Battery Creek High School and has a dual undergraduate degree in Historic Preservation and Art History and a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from University of South Carolina, concentrating in Archives and Special Collections. Cassandra worked at the Historic Beaufort Foundation for two years before joining the BDC full-time in January 2024 in the re-instituted position of Library Specialist concentrating on archival processing and description.
Reminder: The Beaufort County Library System will be closed on April 3rd for Good Friday and on April 21st for Staff Development Day.
