'Twas a week before ChristmasWe all stayed at mom's
A quaint Sea Pines home
Next to Heritage Farms. It was three in the morning
I just couldn't sleep
The house was too quiet
There wasn't a peep.
My wife lay there sleeping
With Jessie and Belle
The house had a mixtureOf Christmas time smells.
I got up and tiptoedOutside and sat downIn the clear Southern nightI could hear a strange sound.A dark, tiny objectAppeared in the skyWith a small, whining engineThat made the thing fly.An ultralight plane? At this time of night? It didn't make senseIt didn't seem right. It landed outside ofThe nature preserveI ran to a spotTo closer observe ...That this strange looking objectWas not a small planeBut a miniature sleighWith harness and reins.A small stocky manAll dressed up in redSat up in the seatAnd got out of the sled.I thought I was dreaming; This happened so quickI suddenly realizedIt must be St. Nick. But why had he come downSo early this year?Where were his presents?Where were his deer?I pondered intenselyWhat this trip was aboutWhen he turnedToward the woodsAnd started to shout:"Come Bubba, come Dixie,Come Beaufort, come Bo,Come Scarlette, come Asher,And ol' Billy Jo.Come Charlotte, Savannah,And Sweet Georgia Brown,Come out an see SantaBut don't make a sound."Then out of the woodsThere seemed to appearA magnificent buckAnd a small herd of deer. They all ran to SantaThey jumped and they playedHe said, "Stay right there,And don't run away."They all gathered round himAll willing and tameHe laughed as he spokeAnd began to explain,"I'll be needing your helpI need a new crewMy faithful old reindeerAre all sick with the flu."There was no time to wasteThere was no time to playHe hitched up a teamAnd jumped back in his sleigh. With some magical dustAnd some magical wordsAway they all flewLike some magical birds. Then I heard Santa sayAs they flew out of sight,"I'll save all the rest of yousome other night!"A smile overcame meI had gotten my wishThe sun was now risingIt was time to go fish!Best fishes to all and to all a good bite!
One cannot get much more local - and seasonal - than this collection of poems. Just be aware that Wagner finds humor in the foibles of humans and local happenings: "The Night Before Christmas" (1990) is about a fishing trip in which the fish wins; "A Redneck Christmas" (2006) has Santa delivering eight cases of beer on a John Deere tractor; his version of the "12 Days of Christmas" (1997) involves lots of fishing gear, "Three months of dockage, Two Evinrudes and a fishing boat under my tree."; "Jingle Bells, The Hilton Head Way" (1991) has this chorus "Jingle Bells, Oyster Shells, Seatrout in the bay. Oh what fun it is to fish in Calibogue Cay."
We have a permanent copy of his book in the Research Room along with those of other local poets in the 810s and Hilton Head Branch Library has a copy to share through its local history section that you can check out.
