Sweetgrass Basket Weaving Classes -- Sign Up Now!

Summer Reading is for adults, too. Our 2010 theme is "Make Waves." There will be weekly prizes and programs we hope that you'll find engaging. Be sure to take a look at our programs and events calendar for something to interest you.

High on our BDC list of engaging programs for teens and adults is the series of free sweetgrass basketry weaving workshops that we are co-sponsoring at various dates, locations, and times the final week of June.

Sweetgrass basketry is very important in Gullah culture. Learn more about sweetgrass basketry in our local history and nature pages. For a wonderful children's book about the heritage of sweetgrass baskets, I recommend Circle Unbroken by Margot Theis Raven. Row upon row : sea grass baskets of the South Carolina lowcountry by Dale Rosengarten is a classic for adults. Aural learners can listen to a podcast of Walter Edgar's interview with Rosengarten and Nakia Wigfall about "Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art" here.

Although there have been other recent presentations about sweetgrass baskets, this is your only chance to create one! (See previous blog entry on April 6th.) The sweetgrass basket weaving demonstrations are free and open to all. However, you'll need to register in advance if you'd like to try your hand at starting a basket. Teen and adult crafters will benefit from interaction with St. Helena Island basket maker Jerydine Taylor. Ms. Taylor will demonstrate the techniques, share her knowledge of the history of the baskets, and cast her watchful eye on the basket makers attempting to begin a basket. Class size is limited.

Youth Services librarian Maria Benac (and recently named St. Helena Branch Library manager) has pulled together an array of choices for the branch libraries. Discover the art of basket weaving and begin creating your own basket at any of these free workshops. Here are your choices of dates, times and locations:
