Continue Your Adventures with the BDC

We'd like for you to continue your adventures with the BDC by attending Cassandra's session about what she's found and learned here in the past six months. She's worked hard on the presentation to capture some of the day-to-day activities that happen here in the Research Room.

If you're concerned that this will be a rehash of the Behind-the-Scenes tours we did back in April, don't be. She mentioned only one of her many projects during those tours.

We intend for this session to attract true history nerds who enjoy the "stuff" of history: the documents, the photographs, the scrapbooks, etc

It's also an opportunity for a young professional to hone her skill set. I think that it's nice to encourage young folks who are poised to make a valid and valuable contribution to the library and archives world. No registration. We'll open the door in the Beaufort Branch Meeting Room at 5 PM on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 for anyone interested in what she's been doing. Program will start at 5:30 PM

The following Monday, July 29th, we hope that you will be able to meet us at one of the more interesting colonial and American Revolution related historic sites: Fort Frederick. Here are the rubs: We're going early - that is at 10 AM - well, because it's late July in the lowcountry. This is almost always a rather sticky and uncomfortable time of year.  The other major differences are you must get yourself to the site and unfortunately there is not a lot of parking space at 601 Old Fort Road nor near 601 Old Fort Road. You may want to consider carpooling with your friends and neighbors and/or parking at the Naval Heritage Park and walking down if you are able. Don't forget your water bottle!

Once you've gone to all that trouble, I think that you will be happy to learn about the preservation of the fort and its history from the archaeologist who supervised the team, Meg Gaillard. And if you're willing, she would like to ask you some questions about your experience at Fort Frederick. Meg is working on her doctorate and it would be of great benefit to her if you'll stop and share your impressions of the site. Please note: There is no requirement that you participate in the survey afterwards.

Just a reminder: Each of these programs will count as "Attend a Library Program" in the Super Reader Bonus Round of the Summer Reading Program. Unfortunately, you can only count attending a library program once. But maybe afterwards, you could pick something from our Fort Lyttelton, or Charlesfort, or Santa Elena posts on our Links, Lists and Finding Aids blog. That way you could check off the "Read Local History" activity, too. That would give you 2 of the 6 activities you need to complete the Bonus Round and get another entry in the grand prize sweepstakes.
